The Right Brush Makes All the Difference
One of the most common questions we hear at Lovely Spaw Grooming is: "Am I using the right brush?" It's such a great question — and the answer really does matter. The right brush makes brushing easier, more comfortable for your pet, and way more effective at keeping their coat healthy between grooming appointments.
Here's our honest, go-to guide for the brushes we love and recommend.
Slicker Brush — Best for Long-Haired Dogs & Cats
A quality slicker brush is your best friend if you have a long-haired dog or cat. The key is using the line brushing method — working through the coat in sections — to make sure you're reaching all the way down to the skin and catching any hidden knots. It's more thorough than brushing in one general sweep, and your pet's coat will thank you for it
Metal Comb — Your Quality Check
After brushing, always follow up with a metal comb to check your work. Run it through the coat, and if it gets stuck, that's your sign to go back and brush a little more. Think of it as your finishing step — simple, but it makes a big difference in catching any tangles you might have missed.
Rubber Brush — Best for Short-Haired Dogs & Cats
For short-haired dogs that shed — think Frenchies, Bulldogs, Pit Bulls — a rubber brush is a game-changer. It's gentle on the skin while being incredibly effective at loosening and lifting shed fur. It works beautifully on short-haired cats too. Your furniture will notice the difference.
Deshedding Brush — Our Personal Favorites
For deshedding, two of our absolute favorites are the SleekEZ and the Equigroomer. Both work wonderfully on dogs and cats alike, pulling out loose undercoat without irritating the skin. If you're only going to invest in one specialty tool, a good deshedding brush is it.
No matter which brush you use, always be gentle and go slow — especially around sensitive areas like the ears, belly, and legs. Brushing should feel good for your pet, not stressful. If your dog or cat tends to resist brushing, it might be time for a professional grooming session to get them started fresh and mat-free.
